A
new event on the midlands scene, the Scooterist Alldayer this
May Set a new standard for the one day event format. Held at
the Adam & Eve pub in Birmingham's Digbeth area (known by
many as 'Gig-Beth), Just a stones throw from the Gran Sport
workshop, the event gave
Scooterists the chance to show off their machinery and take
in sets From no less than four bands, all in aid of the Help
For Heroes charity.
From
the outside 'The Adam' is a good old fashioned boozer in one
of The older parts of the city and from midday - as the street
outside Began to fill with classic scooters and characters -
it soon began to Resemble a scene that could have been taken
straight from the Sixties. With the weather choosing to be kind
an impressive number Of scooters pitched up with groups of bikes
coming and going Throughout the afternoon with them all having
a chance of scooping The best Lammy (sponsored by Gran Sport)
or best Vespa (sponsored by
Aceface Barbers).
First
up on stage were young up-and-coming local band Kayla, playing
To a healthy sized and appreciative crowd despite the early
hour. The big hit of the early part of the day (as it was to
remain all Day) was the beer with all the barstaff being kept
fully occupied. With such a big early crowd organiser Kev Richards
(of scooter-do Fame) started to look a bit nervous as the Kayla
set came to an end As there seemed to be no sign of the next
act on the horizon! He
Needn't have panicked though as early 80s mod legends Squ!re
appeared Right on cue.
Clearly
Squire were who many of the afternoon crowd had come to see
And this modest sized venue was soon packed out for a typically
Polished set. Strangely though, although inside the pub was
full, The road outside still bristled with scooterists enjoying
the warm
Afternoon, the coming and going of bikes, and of course the
beer!
Whilst
there were many who took off in the late afternoon with the
Intention of returning after swapping scooters for methods of
Transport that would allow for more drinking, there were plenty
that Were stopping for the long haul. So much so, that those
returning For the evening line-up found a pub temporarily out
of draft beer and Forced to raid the fridges for just about
anything alcoholic. As Band number three, the Oasis tribute
Fat Ankles took to the stage an Emergency supply also reached
the cellar and normal service was Resumed. The Fat Ankles boys
seemed to cover everything that made The Gallager boys so popular
in the nineties with a mammoth set that Which benefitted from
great sound and a lead singer who did a great Job of lookin'
like Liam as well as sounding like him.
'The
Adam' is pretty well known for making the most of the more Liberal
licensing hours we now enjoy in the UK and for this reason The
last band didn't start their set till nearly eleven. There may
Still have been plenty of folk outside, but by the time The
Coopers Took to the stage inside the place was hot, sweaty and
absolutely Packed. The 'Coops' have now pretty well established
themselves as a Covers band who are committed to doing one thing
above everything Else, and that's delivering a set of crowd
pleasing classics. And so It proved to be with the witching
hour passing to the strains of an Audience enjoying singing
along to just about every tune played.
I
stuck with it till The Coopers left the stage, how long after
then The party continued I don't know. As I left in the early
hours there Were still plenty replenishing their glasses at
the bar!
A
big thank you has to go to our sponsors, Gran Sport And Aceface
Barbers, top bands Kayla, Squire, Fat Ankles and The Coopers,
(the Para's from The Armed Forces SC who made a special Trip)
and Kev Richards who has to get the greatest credit for raising
Over a thousand quid for Help For Heroes.
